Simulated Mission And Rehearsal Training

SMART is a NATO coalition project sponsored by Allied Tactical Command Transformaton (ATC) as part of its remit to transform NATO’s joint operational capability.

The project ultimately aims to create a NATO-managed combined joint Air ‘mission  training  through distributed simulation’ prototype capability for National &  NATO aircrew and operational NATO command staff in three steps;

SMART Phase I (-->Mid 2006) Define the ambition and training goals of NATO and NATO-Nations, prepare a draft Users Requirements Document (URD) and develop a Joint (Air related) scenario.

SMART Phase II +III (2006-2009) NATO SMART Initial Operational Capability (IOC) will establish a working architecture for the interaction between fielded NATO Command and Control (C2) systems and selected National synthetic training devices and will be focused on NATO Reaction Force  (NRF) Air Missions.

SMART Phase III+ (-->2009) It is ATC’s ultimate aim and vision to migrate the initially Joint Air-oriented IOC into a cost-effective & re-useable combined Joint (Air-, Land-, Sea- and Space-component) Full Operational Capability (FOC) to train and rehearse in a virtual environment all facets of future NRF-missions.
